Analyzing the mathematical structure and silicon gate efficiency of ASCON compared to traditional block ciphers.
Recognizing that AES is ill-suited for micro-embedded devices, NIST conducted a multi-year international competition to standardize lightweight cryptographic algorithms. In 2023, ASCON was selected as the winner. WearableHSM provides a production-tested silicon implementation of ASCON-128 and ASCON-Hash.
ASCON relies on a sponge construction operating on a 320-bit state divided into five 64-bit words. Its round function consists of constant addition, a lightweight 5-bit S-box, and a linear diffusion layer based on right-rotations. In silicon, this translates to minimal gate counts and zero memory lookup tables, eliminating cache-timing side-channels.
WearableHSM packages ASCON-encrypted payloads into standardized IEEE 11073 and Continua Health Alliance data structures, enabling seamless integration into enterprise hospital monitoring platforms.
